Hey Fletch … If a church requires its ministry staff to attend a course, such as a discipleship class, after hours, 3 hours a week for 12 weeks, is the church required to pay them for their hours? Is it the same for all classes of employees?

DRF—The answer is “yes.” The church must pay for any work hours and this required class would be work.

Ministers are exempt employees, so they would not earn overtime pay. Non-exempt staff need to track their time for the class and report it on their time card. If they work more than 40 hours in a week, that time is paid at time-and-a-half.
