Nonprofit leaders looking to quickly and efficiently equip their board or finance committee members to oversee the financial affairs of their organization now have a new resource available. Nonprofit Financial Oversight – The Concise and Complete Guide for Boards and Finance Committees (Accountability Press), written by CPA Michael E. Batts, offers straightforward guidance for nonprofit leaders on “covering the bases” in their organizations based on his more than thirty years of hands-on experience serving hundreds of nonprofit organizations.

“You don’t need to be a financial expert to oversee the financial affairs of a nonprofit organization, but you do need to know what to look for and how to evaluate the information you receive,” said Batts. “My hope is that this book will serve as a convenient and helpful resource to strengthen financial oversight in nonprofit organizations as they carry out their important, life-changing work.”

The book, which is available now on Amazon.com, is designed to serve as a concise and clear resource for nonprofit board members, officers, finance committee members, audit committee members, and anyone else with financial oversight responsibilities in a nonprofit organization. Special features include sample policies, a sample finance committee charter, audit committee guidelines and an annual board financial oversight checklist. The annual checklist serves as a simple-to-use “checkup” to help nonprofit boards make sure their financial bases are covered.

“This book should be required reading for the nation’s nonprofit governing boards,” said Dr. Sherry Magill, president of the nonprofit Jessie Ball duPont Fund. “The book not only explains oversight, it shows nonprofit boards and CEOs how to do it. Mike Batts has done yeoman’s service for the nonprofit field.”

Charles Morgan, a Miami tax attorney, mentioned the practical aspects of Nonprofit Financial Oversight.  “The concise manual gives a thorough checklist of questions to ask,” said Morgan. “Included is an organizational checklist, to be performed like a yearly physical, and even a financial stress test. Far better to ask questions before problems develop than to wait until an IRS audit, lawsuit or negative media brings it out.”
