Job Description
Purpose
To serve the church, Senior Pastor, and staff by:
- Providing organizational direction and strategic administrative oversight; seeing that the needs of the congregation are met through the various ministries of the church; assisting the Senior Pastor in his areas of responsibility as designated in the constitution, primarily those of an operational and staff management nature, so that the Senior Pastor can continue his main responsibility of preaching and teaching.
- Facilitating the implementation of the mission, vision, and strategy of the church; seeking to maximize the effectiveness of staff and ministry programs, and coaching them in the administrative oversight of their ministry responsibilities.
- Providing daily leadership and supervision to the ministry staff team – working closely with the Senior Pastor
The desired end is to increase the effectiveness of the Senior Pastor and ministry staff in implementing the mission and vision of the church. The Executive Pastor (XP) will always support the Senior Pastor with his loyalty, encouragement, and by taking on specific duties as they are assigned. He shall work to gain a clear understanding of the authority that the Senior Pastor is giving the XP and the XP will always keep the SP informed of any significant undertakings or issues. The XP will always think of the needs of the congregation ahead of any specific tasks. He will identify and act upon ideas that enable the church to operate more effectively and, in so doing, to better fulfill its vision.
Responsibilities
Senior Staff
- Meet on a regular basis with the Senior Pastor to clarify vision, goals and strategy
- Provide input to the Senior Pastor in developing the vision for the church
- Work with Senior Pastor and Senior Staff in developing strategies for carrying out the vision and ministry plan of Crossroads bible Church
- Work with Senior Staff members to develop annual ministry objectives for fulfilling the church vision
- Share pastoral responsibilities on a very limited basis - such as preaching, teaching, counseling, shepherding, funerals and weddings as the need arises and other pastoral duties assigned by the senior leadership (Sr. Pastor and Elder Council)
Ministry Staff Support and Development
- Work with the Senior Pastor to develop and maintain effective structures for the development of the ministry staff team
- Work with Senior Pastor to ensure effective training of support staff, communication of financial progress, and development of sound accounting principles are adhered to
- Responsible for oversight/management of the ministry staff and day-to-day administration of the church (including Business Administrator) excluding the Senior Pastor
- Coordinate weekly Senior Staff meetings – Senior Pastor leads this meeting
- Coordinate and lead any needed meetings involving the entire Ministry Staff (Pastors, Ministers, Directors)
- Oversee the establishment of measurable goals and annual performance reviews for ministry staff
Coordinate staff functions
- Oversee the church wide leadership development process for staff and volunteers
Elder Team Coordination
- Maintain an open line of communication to the Elder Council
- Be a member of the Elder Executive Committee
- Report to the Elders on issues relating to the staff and operations of the church
- Submit recommendations to the Elder Council Chairman regarding items to be included in Elder meeting agendas
- Track to completion the implementation of tasks delegated to the staff by the Elder Council
- Oversee and conduct annual staff compensation review by the elders
- Facilitate long-range thinking and planning
Administrative Team
- Oversee the Church Business Administrator who will manage the normal day-to-day administrative operations of the church
- Serve as managing editor and approving authority for all church publications, under oversight of Senior Pastor
- Oversee the communications committee/function
- Maintain efficient and effective lines of communication for the entire staff
- Coordinate, with the Business Administrator, the Business Administration task group agenda and discussion
- Bear primary responsibility for budget priorities and management working through the Business Administrator
- Oversee compensation administration
Organizational Relationships
Accountability
- He shall be accountable to the Senior Pastor while having an open line of communication to the Elder Council
- This accountability is maintained through weekly meetings with the Senior Pastor, regular meetings with the Chairman of the Elder Council, and annual performance evaluations
Board Relationships
- Unless elected to the Elder Board by the congregation, he shall attend Elder meetings without a vote
- He shall be a member of the Business Administration task group and the Executive Committee
Staff Relationships
- Works closely with Senior Pastor in communicating vision to ministry staff
- Oversees all ministry and support staff; oversees Business Administrator’s leadership of the support staff
- Member of the Senior Staff
- Oversees the selection and hiring of all ministry staff members, except Senior Pastor, delegating as is appropriate
- Is delegated the responsibilities, authority, and accountability of Senior Pastor during Senior Pastor's absence
Qualifications
The following qualifications are required of the Executive Pastor in this position:
- He shall meet the qualifications of an elder as outlined in Scripture (1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1)
- It is preferred that he shall be ordained as a minister of the Gospel and hold a Master of Divinity degree from an accredited institution
- He shall have zeal for the work of pastoral ministry
- He shall have an ability to work on a team towards specific goals in a mutually edifying and supportive manner
- He shall have a teachable and open attitude
- He shall demonstrate a commitment to the doctrinal statement of Crossroads Bible Church
Policy Maintenance
The Executive Committee has the responsibility for the initiation and annual update of this job description; and with the approval of the Elder Council.
