Executive Pastor
St. Matthew Cumberland Presbyterian Church
St. Matthew is a growing, vibrant body committed to authentic worship, outreach and Christian relationship building within our church family, our community and our world. Located just south of the fast-growing Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, our church campus is in Burleson, Texas. As a regional church, we minister to an ever-increasing geographic radius currently greater than twenty miles in scope.
What Is Our Purpose
The purpose of St. Matthew Cumberland Presbyterian Church is to glorify God and share the love and grace of Jesus Christ with as many people as we can.
How shall we fulfill this purpose?
- By ministering to spiritual, emotional, and physical needs;
- Providing Christian relationships in the family of God; and
- Providing the challenge for individual and collective spiritual growth
What We Do ...
WORSHIP GOD: In the past eight years, St. Matthew added two worship services and worship attendance has more than doubled. Each weekend, an average of 1,250 worshipers attend services. Contemporary worship services - featuring a praise band and casual environment - are held Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Two traditional worship services on Sunday provide time-honored praise through hymns and choral music. All four services minister to spiritual needs through Bible-based, inspired teachings from our senior and associate pastors.
PROVIDE FOR INDIVIDUAL SPIRITUAL GROWTH: Hundreds of adults experience continued spiritual and personal
growth each week through many different small group opportunities.
Small groups include Sunday School classes, topical and Bible study
structures; Family Grace groups meeting together in private homes
for learning; fellowship and relationship building; weekly Bible
Studies for men, women, and learners of all ages; and BASIC (Brothers and Sisters in Christ) Program reaching and teaching young
adults. Additional groups enjoy Christian relationships and
mentoring by working together in a wide variety of mission and
fellowship activities.
INSPIRE OUR YOUTH: Each week over one thousand children and teenagers from all walks of life come through our doors. Our Youth Program meets on Wednesday and Sunday evenings: Wednesday evenings, junior and senior high participate in recreation, worship and Rise-Up, an age specific topical Bible Study/leadership program for teenagers. Power Source, which is a Bible and fellowship program, meets on Sunday evenings. Under the guidance of St. Matthew's youth pastor, spiritually-inspired adults share God's Word and God's love and grace with teens from all walks of life through our exciting Youth Program.
NURTURE OUR CHILDREN: IGNITE! is a Wednesday after-school program targeting 2nd through 6th grade
children. Caring, Christ-energized adults lead children in Bible
study, recreation and worship; the evening culminates in a
family-style meal with dinner parents. The Carpenter's Kids is an exciting music and choir program for ages 4 through 6.
Vacation Bible School in 2006 attracted over 400 children. The St.
Matthew Christian School provides an accredited, quality Christian
education for pre-school children through 5th grade. During church
services and other activities, devoted and loving employees provide
child care for infants and toddlers.
REACH THOSE IN NEED: St. Matthew is a mission church, committed to reaching out to others in Christ's name. Local mission activities include support of our local Harvest House, a community organization that provides food and clothing to those in need; and Cars for Christ Program which has given more than a dozen cars in less than two years, to those without means of transportation. We also reach out to the needy through; sandwich making at a local homeless shelter; Saturday Night Bingo with nursing home residents; and blood drives on campus several times yearly. Adult members and teenagers work on mission trips to other states and Mexico. St. Matthew supports world missions with a presence in Uganda, Africa, Myanmar, South Korea, and eventually in Mongolia. We fund the salary for an on-site missionary in South Korea, who is considered part of our Asian mission.
SUPPORT THOSE IN CRISIS: Providing continued personal and spiritual support for those experiencing health problems is a high priority for our church community. We genuinely care for one another – serving Christ by serving others. Our 24/7 passionate care ministry includes hospital and home visitation from staff members and trained laity. Counseling services by staff pastors and a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist provide individual counseling. Grief Counseling, an Alzheimer's Support Group, an Alcoholic Anonymous Support group, Parenting with Love and Logic educational opportunities, week-end Marriage Enrichment Seminars, Anger and Conflict Resolution studies, and Stress Management classes are provided.
ENCOURAGE PHYSICAL HEALTH:
The St. Matthew ARC (Athletic & Recreation
Center) offers diverse
fitness activities and year-round exercise in the church's gym. ARC
programs are dedicated to strengthening and furthering the holistic
health of persons in our church body and community. ARC activities
include a professionally designed walking track, yoga and jazzercise
classes, Youth and Adult Tae Kwon Do, Cardio Kick Boxing and Boot
Camp.
The ARC offers basketball leagues, volleyball, and 1st Place, a Christian based weight loss program. Weight Watchers meets at the church, and St. Matthew participates in the Christian Upward Basketball and Cheerleading Program. The church operates a Skateboard Park in cooperation with the city of Burleson and outdoor volleyball tournaments are held on the church's sand courts.
A CHRISTIAN PRESENCE IN THE COMMUNITY: An important, harmonizing outreach to our community occurs through the use of church facilities by many civic and private groups. The Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Mom's Club and others meet weekly at St. Matthew. Youth league basketball practice, community prayer breakfasts, distribution of Holiday Friends gifts and food, the 5th Quarter (providing food and fun activities for youth following high school games), school and community banquets -- these are only a few examples of St. Matthew's Christian presence and support in the Burleson community.

What We Believe
- God is sovereign creator of the cosmos. The question of creation is not how but who and why. God created because it is his nature and because he loves.
- Jesus Christ is the Lord of the Church. Our government does not allow for a paid or elected individual to dictate the actions of the local church. Jesus Christ is head and the ultimate leader. He is also the perfect expression of what it means to be human and the only possible means of Salvation.
- The Holy Spirit works through the scriptures, sacraments, corporate worship, small groups and personal witness to convict people of their sin and point them in the direction of Jesus. The Holy Sprit is the indwelling of God in the life of the believer.
- The Bible is the ultimate authority by which God strives to give order, direction and grace to believers and the corporate body. Scripture is primary to tradition and experience because both can be easily manipulated.
- We are sinners in need of Jesus who reveals to us the nature of God's grace. Though we are sinners, people are also created in the Image of God and thus heirs to the promise.
- Any believer is welcome to receive the Lord's Supper.
- Baptism is a symbol that grace comes before faith. Parents can choose to offer their children up for infant baptism or allow them to wait until they accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. Baptisms of other denominations are recognized. Though pouring is our primary baptism mode, new believers can request immersion.
- Elders and Deacons are elected by the body to serve alongside the ministerial staff for 3-year terms. Elders work with the staff to provide vision and spiritual oversight in keeping with the St. Matthew purpose and mission. Deacons mobilize the laity for mission and vision reality.
- Marriage is a gift from God designed for a man and a woman who desire to enter into a covenant relationship.
