Opportunity Profile

Our Opportunity

Orchards Community Church (OCC) in Lewiston, Idaho, is looking for a Senior Associate Pastor. The man selected for this position will assist the Senior Pastor by functioning as the organizational and strategic leader of the church who implements the vision established by the Senior Pastor and Ministry Council.

He will be a dynamic leader who has outstanding equipping skills and a passion to identify, recruit, train, and deploy leaders. He will also be someone who enjoys managing a growing staff. This person will build a ministry infrastructure that will lead the church to greater health and growth, both quantitative and qualitative.

Our Community

Quality of life is key to the growth and attractiveness of the Lewis-Clark Valley. The town of Lewiston is the largest of four towns in the Lewis-Clark Valley: Clarkston (18,161), Lewiston (30,487), Moscow (22,000) and Pullman (25,150).1

Separated by the Snake River, Lewiston (Idaho) and Clarkston (Washington) have the following median ages:

In the region, there is a retail market population of 160,762 people, with an average household income of $36,606.2 The average price of a house in 2004 was $116,860 and the unemployment rate was 5.1% in 2005.

Some would say there is a "Mountain Man" image in the region. The "Mountain Man" is a man or family of the northwest, people of independent minds. As would be expected, there is an emphasis on outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing, camping, 4-wheeling and boating.

As mentioned in "Lewis-Clark Valley Quality of Life," Valley Vision: Economic Development Lewis-Clark Valley, www.lewis-clarkvalley.com:

National Geographic featured our region in their article "A Paradise Called The Palouse." Another beautiful part of our region is the acclaimed "Gateway to Hell's Canyon." From Paradise to Hell, it's a country of contrasts with fertile cropland and timberland interwoven between mountain ridges, river valleys, and deep scenic canyons.

Nearly all the great rivers in the Northwest come to, through, or near Lewiston. While the Snake and Clearwater Rivers are right outside our front door, the Salmon, Selway, Lochsa, St. Joe, Grande Rhonde, and dozens of smaller waterways are all within easy driving distance.

As beautiful as the rivers are, the landscape around them is even more spectacular. From the craggy cliffs looming above the Snake (which flows through the deepest gorge in North America) to the pine and fir forest which line the Selway, from the green glades of the shadowy St. Joe to the sage country framing the Grande Rhonde, there's a setting to match every taste.

Lewiston is just a stone's throw away from the largest contiguous wilderness area in the lower forty-eight states: The River of No Return, Selway-Bitterroot, Gospel Hump, Mallard-Larkins, Sawtooth, and Eagle Cap Wilderness Areas are all part of this watershed, not to mention another half-dozen National Forests and twice as many state and regional parks.

A relatively mild year-round climate (known also as the "Banana Belt of the Northwest"), low crime rate, low cost of living, and many outdoor recreational opportunities, makes our Valley a very enjoyable place for family living.

Our Church

OCC is set in a beautiful environment, populated with hard-working, independently minded people. Currently our weekly attendance is about 650 in three Sunday morning services. Our 8:15 service is in our Chapel with a smaller group of people who prefer to sing hymns. Our 9:15 and 10:45 services are in our Worship Center, with a more contemporary worship style.

Our Sunday morning Children's Ministry, Adventure Land, runs simultaneously with our 9:15 and 10:45 services. Additionally, we have about 35 Small Groups that meet throughout the week with @300 adults involved.

We are located on what has become the main thoroughfare in our Valley, Bryden Avenue that ultimately links the "Twin-Cities" of Lewiston and Clarkston. With a commitment to stay in this prime location the Lord has made it possible for us to purchase five homes adjoining our property over the past 20 years. Four of those homes have been removed and the property has been turned into parking lots. Additionally, we built an all-purpose building in the early 90's that has become our Worship Center, capable of seating up to 350.

We currently have $300,000 set aside for the eventual construction of a new "Connection Center" as an addition to replace our overcrowded and inefficient foyer area.

We are a non-affiliated community church, one of the larger and more reputable in the Valley. We truly represent a cross-section of backgrounds with Baptists, Lutherans, CMA, Charismatics, and numerous people without a church background at all! We are non-charsimatic, though not anti-charismatic. We choose to rally around our mission rather than doctrinal tangents.

Our philosophy of ministry has been influenced by Saddleback Community Church, Willow Creek Community Church, and Christ The King Community Church (Bellingham, Washington). Though our Sunday morning services are not seeker-targeted, they are seeker-sensitive.

According to David Fletcher founder and director of www.xpastor.org , who did a leadership audit on our ministry: "Orchards is clear on its vision and purpose. In 1999, the church decided to become a 'purpose driven' church and Orchards saw significant growth. While many churches have a vision statement, or call themselves 'purpose driven,' Orchards is a leader on applying the vision to every aspect of church life.

Our Pastor

Mark Brewster, a graduate of Multnomah Bible College and Western Conservative Baptist Seminary (both in Portland, Oregon) has been the pastor of OCC since September 1984. Under his ministry, the church has seen consistent growth in every way (with much of that growth taking place, as mentioned before, when the church moved to a more "purpose-driven" model). His primary strengths include visionary leadership, relevant preaching, and shepherding people. A practical "life-issue" preacher, his sermons are known to challenge both the saved and unsaved. His ongoing vision for the ministry is that OCC will be a place where those without Christ will feel welcome to come and hear the gospel, and those who know Christ will grow in their faith.
