Glenkirk Church is a large Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation in Glendora, California. Glendora is a city of more than 53,700 people in the eastern San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County. There are four contiguous cities of comparable size comparable size with a total population more than 750,000 within a twenty-minute drive. Glendora was originally a farming community, but it now primarily serves as a bedroom community for the greater Los Angeles area. The local economy includes many service businesses and health-care agencies, as well as light industry. There are six major institutions of higher learning within five miles of Glenkirk. While the existing community is approximately 65% Caucasian there is a growing trend of Hispanic and Asian families moving into the area.

Glenkirk's community includes a variety of mainline and evangelical churches, as well as a very significant population of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At least three churches have been planted in the city in the past ten years. The most current Mission Study indicates the majority of the community does not attend church on Sunday.

Glenkirk was founded in 1955. During its fifty years, it has had a history of long term pastoral leadership. The congregation has had steady growth to a current membership of over 1400 members with an average Sunday worship attendance of 1100. The Holy Spirit is leading us into a new chapter of church life. We recently hired an Associate Pastor of Family Life, Director of Student Ministries, and created a position of Church Business Administrator.

Glenkirk is committed to growth, both numerically and in the spiritual depth of its members. Our mission statement is "To lead uncommitted people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ." Our stated vision is "To be a biblically functioning community that participates in God's work throughout the world ... " We are Christ-centered, biblically faithful, mission-focused and empowered by the Holy Spirit to do His work in our community and the world. Glenkirk functions as a missional church which includes characteristics of the WillowCreek Community Church. Glenkirk is a member of the WillowCreek Association and sends several staff and lay leaders to WCA conferences each year. Glenkirk seeks to impact the east San Gabriel Valley with the whole gospel of Christ.

The Executive Pastor will serve as the chief operations pastor, who, under the direction of the Senior Pastor, oversees and coordinates the ministries of the ordained and program staff, to ensure that Glenkirk's mission and vision are integrated throughout the whole congregation. The Executive Pastor also provides direct leadership to Glenkirk Shepherding Ministries.

Personality and Skills

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

The Executive Pastor (hereinafter, EP) should have a balanced mix of these attributes:

A completed Master of Divinity, and ordination in the Presbyterian Church USA or its sister denominations, coupled with several years of ministry experience is required.

The Opportunity Setting

Glenkirk Church is committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the giving of our time, energies and resources to fulfilling the Great Commission. Glenkirk was part of the "Confessing Church Movement" and recently reaffirmed its support of the current Book Of Order and Confessions. A high percentage of church members do not have a Presbyterian background and hold some reservations about the direction of the larger Presbyterian Church USA. Strong biblical preaching and teaching is critically important to us.

There is a great desire to reach people beyond the walls of the Church and reach out to those who do not have a great interest in the Christian life. Our leaders are willing to discuss changes and implement elements of new church growth concepts. Glenkirk has a commitment to examine and incorporate elements from other church movements such as the Willow Creek Association and has implemented many of their principles and programs in the past several years. There is a focus on individual evangelism that regularly leads to many conversions.

Both Fuller Theological Seminary and Azusa Pacific University are local institutions that provide excellent theological libraries and many ministry related resources and professional contacts that partner with Glenkirk. Finally, building meaningful relationships within our congregation and creating more effective outreach to our community are essential.
