Job Summary
The Executive Pastor will assist and support the Senior Pastor primarily by overseeing the direction and day-to-day operations of the church. This will require a firm grasp of the purpose, vision, values and strategy of Bethany Church. He will lead, manage, supervise, and minister to all the church staff. The Executive Pastor will ensure that the systems, practices, and policies of the church responsibly and effectively support its ministry objectives and personnel. He will also serve the congregation and staff through fellowship, encouragement, cooperation and prayer support. The Executive Pastor will also be responsible for developing, growing and leading the Small Group ministry of the church.
Responsibilities
Mentoring Responsibilities
- Coordinate and lead weekly staff meetings and other activities designed to clarify and execute church goals and objectives.
- Be available to staff and ministry leaders to assist in making on-going decisions that keep their ministries moving forward.
- To motivate and mobilize staff and church members through recognizing their gifts, strengths, and delegating authority and maintaining reasonable oversight.
- Oversee supervision, training, and development of the staff. Supervise the pastoral and support staff and provide direction for the effective functioning of the church office/ministry support functions.
Administration Responsibilities
Directly responsible for interviewing, hiring and dismissal of staff after consultation and guidance from the Senior Pastor and Trustee Board. - Provide leadership to the pastoral staff in the design and implementation of all church ministries.
- Able to recommend salary reviews and recommendations based on performance evaluations and budget requirements.
- Complete administrative record keeping in accordance with applicable laws and regulations including attendance, vacation, benefits, policies and procedures, etc.
- Maintain efficient and effective lines of communication between the staff and Trustee Board.
- Oversee the negotiation and implementation of insurance plans and other benefits.
- Ensure the church is supported with necessary staff and project fluctuations and make the necessary adjustments in job descriptions, budgets and staffing requirements.
Oversight Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain and update the employee handbook and any/all policies and procedures set forth by the church.
- Oversee the effective operation and maintenance of computer, information and communication systems with support from lay volunteers and paid technological consultants.
- Oversee the care, use, and inventory of all church owned or leased property and facilities, e.g. buildings, grounds, vehicles, equipment and furnishings. Direct the maintenance, repair and housekeeping of all church property.
- Coordinate and maintain the master church calendar of events and reconcile any conflicts of program and facility scheduling.
- Oversee church communication, advertising and marketing efforts including development, editing and final proofing of the weekly bulletin presenting an accurate and timely information piece for those attending our weekly services.
- Approve all content and make recommendations for the church website.
- Provide public relations for the church on all print, radio, and television media requests for comment in non-crisis situations as directed by the Senior Pastor and the Trustee Board.
- Provide oversight and direction in the large variety of financial functions of the church, including: support in fundraising, cash flow, contributions, insurance, banking and financing, payroll, leases, budget planning, oversight and capital stewardship campaigns.
- Ensure staffing, facilities and programs are appropriately and effectively aligned to best meet our strategic goals.
- Development and implementation of the Small Group ministry. Involves the planning, organization, training, implementation, and leading of Small Group ministry.
Catalyst Responsibilities
- To look for new ways of organizing, operating or ministering that will increase the church's impact and fulfill its vision and purpose.
- To look for best practices of other churches or organizations and way that apply to Bethany Church.
- To make recommendations to the Senior Pastor of things that need to be addressed for the future development of the church ministries.
- Development and implementation of the Small Group ministry. Involves the planning, organization, training, implementation, and leading of Small Group ministry.
Ministry Responsibilities
- To walk consistently with the Lord and demonstrate faith and obedience in personal life and ministry.
- To demonstrate a consistency of character between his walk with God, how he deals with people and how he fulfills his responsibilities.
- To actively engage in an effective personal ministry to the congregation through teaching groups or classes and having individual appointments.
- To conduct congregational care visits, be available for counseling weddings, funerals, etc. as needed.
- To look for opportunities to share Christ and encourage believers to mature in Christ.
- Other pastoral and administrative duties as requested or assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Strong biblical foundation for wise management in a church setting. Able to establish and maintain appropriate standards for the accomplishment of ministry in a way that honors both God and people.
- A proven leader and strategic thinker who will guide the pastoral staff in casting vision, and mobilize administrative support to maintain and advance the ministry of the church.
- Strong interpersonal skills—ability to communicate persuasively and compassionately both orally and in writing. Must understand group dynamics and ensure effective consensus building and decision-making.
- Proven fiscal responsibility—able to recruit, train, and manage staff or lay people to perform a wide variety of budgeting and administrative responsibilities. Must be competent in the preparation and review of budget reports and able to spot and correct errors in reporting.
- Exemplifies an active spiritual life including daily study of God's Word, worship, discipleship and prayer.
- Experience in implementing, organizing and leading small groups in a church.
- Stays current with ministry trends through study and attendance of approved conferences.
- Is at the church for all regular worship services and, as directed, special services.
- Is available to the congregation before and after services as other duties allow.
- Maintains flexible working hours as determined by the needs of the ministry.
- Financially supports the ministry of the church by faithfully giving tithes and offerings and has wise stewardship over his personal finances.
- While it is not a requirement for the job, the ideal candidate will have the ability to teach/preach as needed.
